Food Fight - FTC Issues Administrative Complaint Regarding POM Wonderful Claims

Cook Like Jackie reported last month on POM Wonderful's successful bid against Ocean Spray's labeling claims regarding its pomegranate juice products. Now it seems that POM Wonderful has a legal issue of its own to tackle. As part of its ongoing efforts to uncover over-hyped health claims in food advertising, the Federal Trade Commission has issued an administrative complaint charging the makers of POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice and POMx supplements with making false and unsubstantiated claims that their products will prevent or treat heart disease, prostate cancer, and erectile dysfunction.

The FTC complaint charges that POM Wonderful LLC, sister corporation Roll International Corp., and principals Stewart Resnick, Lynda Resnick, and Matthew Tupper violated federal law by making deceptive disease prevention and treatment claims. The ads in question appeared in national publications such as Parade, Fitness, The New York Times , and Prevention magazines; on Internet sites such as pomtruth.com, pomwonderful.com, and pompills.com; on bus stops and billboards; in newsletters to customers; and on tags attached to the product.

POM Wonderful Pomegranate Juice is widely available at grocery stores nationwide, and a 16 oz. bottle retails for approximately $3.99. POMx pills and liquid extract are sold via direct mail, with a one-month supply costing approximately $30.

The Director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection staunchly contested POM Wonderful's claims and the scientific data used to support them. "Any consumer who sees POM Wonderful products as a silver bullet against disease has been misled," said David Vladeck, Director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection. "When a company touts scientific research in its advertising, the research must squarely support the claims made. Contrary to POM Wonderful's advertising, the available scientific information does not prove that POM Juice or POMx effectively treats or prevents these illnesses."

Some of the advertising claims included statements such as "SUPER HEALTH POWERS! ... 100% PURE POMEGRANATE JUICE ... Backed by $25 million in medical research. Proven to fight for cardiovascular, prostate and erectile health." "NEW RESEARCH OFFERS FURTHER PROOF OF THE HEART-HEALTHY BENEFITS OF POM WONDERFUL JUICE. 30% DECREASE IN ARTERIAL PLAQUE ... 17% IMPROVED BLOOD FLOW ... PROMOTES HEALTHY BLOOD VESSELS … "

"Prostate health. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among men in the United States and the second-leading cause of cancer death in men after lung cancer. Time pill. Stable levels of prostate-specific antigens (or PSA levels) are critical for men with prostate cancer. Patients with quick PSA doubling times are more likely to die from their cancer. According to a UCLA study of 46 men age 65 to 70 with advanced prostate cancer, drinking an 8 oz glass of POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice every day slowed their PSA doubling time by nearly 350%. ... 83% of those who participated in the study showed a significant decrease in their cancer regrowth rate."

"You have to be on pomegranate juice. You have a 50 percent chance of getting [prostate cancer]. Listen to me. It is the one thing that will keep your PSA normal. You have to drink pomegranate juice. There is nothing else we know of that will keep your PSA in check. … It's also 40 percent as effective as Viagra."

The FTC's administrative complaint against POM Wonderful alleges that these claims are false and unsubstantiated:

Clinical studies prove that POM Juice and POMx prevent, reduce the risk of, and treat heart disease, including by decreasing arterial plaque, lowering blood pressure, and improving blood flow to the heart;

Clinical studies prove that POM Juice and POMx prevent, reduce the risk of, and treat prostate cancer, including by prolonging prostate-specific antigen doubling time;

Clinical studies prove that POM Juice prevents, reduces the risk of, and treats, erectile dysfunction.

The FTC complaint alleges that POM Wonderful's heart disease claims are false and unsubstantiated because many of the scientific studies conducted by POM Wonderful did not show heart disease benefit from use of its products. It alleges that the prostate cancer claims are false and unsubstantiated because, among other reasons, the study POM Wonderful relied on was neither "blinded" nor controlled. Finally, it alleges that the erectile dysfunction claims are false and unsubstantiated because the study on which the company relied did not show that POM Juice was any more effective than a placebo.

The complaint sets forth a proposed order that would prevent future law violations by POM Wonderful. In part, the proposed order would require that future claims that any pomegranate-based product cures, prevents, treats, or reduces the risk of any disease not be misleading and comply with Food and Drug Administration regulations for the claim. Although FDA approval of health claims generally is not required for compliance with the FTC Act, the proposed order would require FDA pre-approval before POM Wonderful makes future claims that certain products prevent or treat serious diseases, in order to provide clearer guidance for the company, facilitate POM Wonderful's compliance with the proposed order, and make it easier to enforce. The complaint also proposes to prohibit the respondents from making any other health claim about any food, drug, or dietary supplement without competent and reliable scientific evidence.

In a related case, Mark Dreher, POM Wonderful's former head of scientific and regulatory affairs and expert endorser, has agreed to a settlement that bars him from making any disease treatment or prevention claims in advertising for a POM Wonderful product unless the claim is not misleading and comports with FDA requirements for the claim. The settlement also prohibits Dreher from making other health claims for a food, drug, or dietary supplement for human use without competent and reliable scientific evidence to support the claim. The settlement contains a cooperation clause and reporting provisions to assist the FTC in monitoring compliance with the order.

For Chocolate Lovers - Cocoa DNA Mapping Completed Ahead of Schedule

Mars, Incorporated, the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS), and IBM released the preliminary findings of their breakthrough cacao genome sequence and made it available in the public domain earlier this week. This joint research endeavor is likely to improve the cocoa growing process and represents a successful private/public partnership for the benefit of the world's cocoa farmers, and a more sustainable world cocoa supply.

The preliminary sequencing of the cacao genome is a promising first step in advancing farmers' ability to plant more robust, higher yielding and drought and disease-resistant trees. The results of the research will be made available to the public with permanent access via the Cacao Genome Database (www.cacaogenomedb.org) to ensure that the data remains perpetually open without patent, as well as to allow scientists to begin applying the findings immediately to crop cultivation efforts.

With approximately 6.5 million farmers depending on cocoa for their livelihoods - most of them coming from small, family-run farms, cocoa is a crucial crop for their survival and the economies of their nations. However, cocoa crops have always been plagued by serious global losses from pests and diseases, and to date, there has been very little investment in scientific research to improve the cacao tree.

Decades of Mars research has led to major innovations in the areas of sustainable cocoa farming technology. The company's latest partnership - blending Mars' cocoa expertise, USDA-ARS' extensive experience with other major crops and IBM's technology - is an example of the role business can play in addressing challenging global issues.

The results of this uniquely collaborative project --which were delivered three years early due to Mars' scientific leadership, advances in genome technology and constant real-time collaboration with key partners--mark a significant scientific milestone that is already starting to benefit millions of farmers, particularly in West Africa where more than 70 percent of the world's cocoa crop is produced. By making the results publicly available, scientists will have access to key learnings to advance plant science, while plant breeders and farmers around the world will be able to develop cacao trees that are more sustainable, and can better fend off the environmental assaults that inflict $700 to $800 million in damages to farmers' crops each year. Cocoa has traditionally garnered little agricultural research especially when compared to other crops including corn, wheat and rice and therefore has earned the moniker "the orphan crop."

Mars was the primary funder of the project, investing millions into the research. Other partners in addition to the USDA-ARS Subtropical Horticulture Research Station in Miami, and the Jamie Whitten Research Center in Stoneville, Miss., and IBM, include: Clemson University Genomics Institute; Public Intellectual Property Resource for Agriculture at the University of California-Davis; National Center for Genome Resources; Center for Genomics and Bioinformatics at Indiana University; HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology; and Washington State University. Food Fight - POM Wonderful Wins Lawsuit Against Welches Over Pomegranate Juice Claims

A federal court jury in Los Angeles recently found that juice maker Welch's intentionally misled consumers with false and deceptive labeling on its "100% Juice White Grape Pomegranate" product. In reality, each 64oz bottle contains over 63oz of inexpensive apple and white grape filler juices, plus additional color and flavor enhancers. Less than a single ounce per bottle is actually pomegranate juice.

The verdict is the culmination of a nearly two-week trial during which POM Wonderful argued that Welch's misleading labeling was a violation of the Lanham Act, which allows businesses to seek relief from competitors who are engaging in false advertising. POM Wonderful sells 100% pure pomegranate juice.

During the trial, POM successfully demonstrated that the product's labeling, which features large, prominently placed images of pomegranates on the front label, was intentionally designed to trick consumers into believing the product contained a substantial quantity of pomegranate juice.

Throughout the trial, several witnesses testified that they had bought the Welch's product believing it contained large amounts of pomegranate juice. All of these witnesses were seeking the widely documented health giving properties of pomegranate juice. When they learned that the product contained less than one ounce of pomegranate juice in a 64-ounce bottle, they were surprised and felt cheated.

During the initial phase of trial, in which the judge did not permit testimony from POM's damages expert, the jury did not find that POM sustained injury due to the deceptively labeled Welch's product.

■1 Tablespoon vegetable oil

■2 carrots diced

■2 stalks celery, diced

■1 small yellow oinion, diced

■2 cloves garlic, chopped

■1/2 pound smoked sausage, sliced

■1 (15 ounce) can kidney beans, rinsed and drained

■1 (15 ounce) can cannellini beans, rinsed and drained

■1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes, drained

■2 bay leaves

■1 teaspoon dried thyme

■1/2 teaspoon salt

■1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

■1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley (optional)

Instructions

1. Heat oil in an Emile Henry Cassoulet over medium-high heat. Add the sausage and cook for a few minutes to brown. Add the carrots, celery, onion, and garlic; cook and stir for a few minutes, until the onion is transparent.

2. Pour in the kidney beans, cannellini beans and tomatoes, and season with the bay leaves, thyme, salt and pepper. Cover, and reduce the heat to low. Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally until vegetables are tender.

3. Remove bay leaves and discard. Sprinkle parsley over the top, and serve.

I first had a chance to see the MyPressi twist in action at the Housewares Show earlier this year. I enjoyed a wonderful rooibos cappucino and was hooked. The company provided me with a demo unit which at first glance appeared to be quite complicated, but once the unit was assembled I was set. The directions could be a bit clearer, and those with little knowledge of common espresso terms like single and double-wall or tamping may want to increase their knowledge before investing in one. The air cartridges are especially atractive as it makes the unit independent of electricity, and with the nice velvet carry case, one can take it to a party with them and bring espresso as their "dish". I had an opportunity to get up close and personal with a demo model of the Gaggia Accademia at the Housewares show earlier this year and was thoroughly impressed with this superautomatic espresso machine, not only for its design, but for its handling and the thoughtful details that seemed to address many of the oversights of superautomatic machines in other lines. The machine is substantial and all of the parts feel sturdy. The machine is front loading which makes removing the brewing system and cleaning out the grounds tray extremely quick and features an integrated coffee bean container and integrated grinder. The TFT display features color and black characters and the one touch multi-beverage panel is easy to use and makes selecting your drink of choice quick and easy. As you may expect a machine of this type allows you to customize your drinks so that each of your particular drink attributes from the body of your drink down to the amount of milk or coffee to be put into your cup are maintained in the system. The touch button system ahs separate buttons for espresso, caffe, caffe longo, cappuccino, latte macchiato and latte. The machine has a 15-bar pressure system and a 1.6 liter water tank along with a double boiler and a hot water and steam nozzle attached to the front of the machine. The milk jar is removable and also integrated into the machine and includes an automatic milk circuit cleaning cycle. Nestlé Nespresso officially opened 200th boutique worldwide in Shanghai in mid-August. It joins new boutique locations opened this year in the international cities of Miami, Cape Town, and a new flagship boutique in Brussels as Nespresso continues to grow its global retail network to more than 220 boutiques this year. Melbourne, New York (Soho) and a new flagship in Munich are also scheduled for openings later this year.

Nespresso Lattissima Premium

Nespresso in a continued partnership with DeLonghi has launched a new Lattissima Pump Espresso Maker featuring a full metal body that gives it a sleek look especially for those with stainless hardware in their kitchens. The Lattissima was first introduced by the companies in 2007 in response to demand for coffee-based milk drinks like cappuccinos, lattes and macchiatos. Although the shape remains largely the same, there are subtle design enhancements like the full metallic housing on the unit coupled with metallic buttons with text adding simplicy to its one-touch features. The unit also has three different alert systems that signal the user when the water tank is empty, when the capsule container is full and another when the machine is in need of descaling. New Flavors - Snyders and Lance One Step Closer to Merger

The Procter & Gamble Company recently announced plans to use renewable, sustainable, sugarcane-derived plastic on selected packaging on its Pantene Pro-V®, COVERGIRL® and Max Factor® brands.

Sugarcane-derived plastic is a significant development in sustainable packaging because it is made from a renewable resource, unlike traditional plastic, which is made from non-renewable petroleum. The new material is made in an innovative process which transforms sugarcane into high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic, a type commonly used for product packaging. It remains 100% recyclable in existing municipal recycling facilities.

By launching this renewable packaging on some of its global beauty brands, P&G will leverage its scale to deliver meaningful environmental improvements. P&G will source the sugarcane-derived plastic from Braskem SA, who manufactures the material using ethanol made from sustainably-grown Brazilian sugarcane. The pilot will be rolled out globally over the next 2 years, with the first products expected to be on shelf in 2011.

Food as Art - Fine Art Fridges Exhibit Cools Down Chicago

Chicago, one of the coolest places in the United States has just become even cooler. Those visiting Michigan Avenue through September 15th, can enjoy a unique exhibit featuring artwork made from recycled refrigeratorson display as part of The Fine Art Fridges exhibit sponsored by ComEd. The works depicts themes ranging from Chicago architecture to a celebration of flowers.

In one of the pieces, artist VooDoo Larry Grobe has transformed a vintage 1950s Philco fridge into a jazzy "VooDoo Hot Rod." In another, Nicole Beck celebrates wildlife in a mosaic tribute to endangered life in the Gulf of Mexico. Nine pieces designed by Chicago-area artists will be displayed on the sidewalk along the Magnificent Mile between Chicago Avenue and Illinois Street.

The exhibit was created to raise awareness for ComEd's Appliance Recycling Program, through which ComEd will haul away old, second working refrigerators or freezers free of charge. In return, ComEd customers will receive $25.00 per appliance. To date, the program has removed more than 43,000 inefficient appliances from the market.

The company noted that many households have an extra working refrigerator or freezer in their basement or garage, however, older refrigerator appliances can use up to five times more energy than their energy-efficient equivalents. It is estimated that continued usage of an older model can result in $150 per year in extra electricity costs.

The works may be found along Michigan Avenue at many locations including Tiffany's, Cole Hann, Saks, Coach, Chicago Place, Aldo, The Omni Hotel, Grand Lux Cafe and The Garmin Store.

Food Fight - Ocean Spray Files Federal Lawsuit

Ocean Spray Cranberries, Inc. filed a lawsuit on yesterday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts for violations of federal and state law by Decas Cranberry Sales, Inc. and related companies, as well as several unnamed cranberry growers and handlers. The suit alleges that the defendants orchestrated a deceitful campaign falsely accusing Ocean Spray of violating the law and harming the cranberry industry.

The complaint states that the defendants joined together in promoting a smear campaign against Ocean Spray that included soliciting cranberry growers (including Ocean Spray's grower-owners) not to work with Ocean Spray, soliciting cranberry growers (including Ocean Spray's grower-owners) to join an intended lawsuit against Ocean Spray by falsely claiming that Ocean Spray is violating federal law, including the federal
antitrust laws.

The Complaint also alleges that Decas Cranberry, Ocean Spray's direct competitor, has used a variety of additional deceptive tactics and media for Decas' disinformation campaign, including widely distributed letters and emails to growers, internet blogs and websites, Facebook accounts, YouTube videos and Twitter postings that Decas fraudulently led consumers to believe emanated from an independent non-profit consumer advocacy group, rather than from Decas Cranberry itself.

Ocean Spray is an agricultural cooperative owned by 650 cranberry growers in Massachusetts, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and other parts of Canada as well as approximately 50 Florida grapefruit growers. The company was formed 80 years ago by three cranberry growers from Massachusetts and New Jersey with Florida grapefruit growers joined the Cooperative in 1976.

Ocean Spray is North America's leading producer of shelf-stable juice drinks, and has been the best-selling brand name in that category since 1981. Ocean Spray posted gross sales of $2 billion in 2009 and recently launched a line of blueberry flavored drink products.

New York Botanical Garden "Edible Garden" Open Through October 17th

The New York Botanical Garden recently opened its Edible Garden, an exhibition about growing and preparing good food. Set across the 250-acre Botanical Garden landscape and open to the public through October 17, 2010, the exhibition celebrates locally grown, seasonal food through demonstrations from food and gardening experts every day and teaches visitors how to grow the best food at home.

EU Logo for Organic Products Will Appear on Products Beginning July 1st

The European Union announced in February of this year a new logo that will appear on all organic products sold in the EU. The winning design by German student Dusan Milenkovic, was chosen from over 3,500 submissions. An online voting process gathered over 130,000 votes to select a winner.

The “Euro Leaf” design will appear on all pre-packaged organic products that have been produced in any of the EU Member States and meet the necessary standards beginning July 1st. The logo will be optional for imported products. Other private, regional or national logos will be allowed to appear alongside the EU label. The organic farming regulation was amended to introduce the new logo into one of the annexes.

The ”Euro-leaf” design shows the EU stars in the shape of a leaf against a green background. It is a very straightforward sign containing two clear messages: Nature and Europe.

In collaboration with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), and as a precautionary measure, McDonald’s USA has issued a voluntary product recall of the four Shrek Forever After™ promotional pieces of glassware recently offered in U.S. restaurants. It's important to know that the CPSC has said the glassware is not toxic. However, we’re requesting customers stop using the glassware and return them to any U.S. McDonald’s restaurant beginning June 9. Previous McDonald’s promotional glassware and Happy Meal toys are not involved in the recall.

To be clear, the glassware was evaluated by an independent third-party laboratory which is accredited by the CPSC, and determined to be in compliance with all applicable federal and state requirements at the time of manufacture and distribution. However, in light of the CPSC’s evolving assessment of standards for cadmium in consumer products, McDonald’s determined in an abundance of caution that a voluntary recall of the Shrek Forever After™ glassware is appropriate.

As always, the safety and well-being of our customers is a top priority and would never be knowingly compromised. McDonald’s safety standards are among the highest in the industry and we have a strong track record. McDonald’s has a longstanding, cooperative relationship with the CPSC, and we continue to follow their lead as testing protocols and new scientific information becomes available.

Dogfish Head Craft Brewery Pays Homage to Miles Davis' 'Bitches Brew'

It is hard to believe that 40 years ago Miles Davis, one of jazz musics most iconic figures released his classic "Bitches Brew". In honor of the great jazz performer and his jazz-funk-fusion masterpiece, Dogfish Head Craft Brewery of Delaware recently unveiled a newly created commemorative ale that is as complex as the man himself. Their Bitches Brew beer was recently unveiled at Savor, An American Craft Beer & Food Experience, held at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C.

The bold, dark beer brings together three strands of imperial stout and one thread of honey beer with gesho root, bark of gesho, a hop-like plant which is commonly used in beer as a bittering agent The company recommends pairing the beer with spicy foods such as chili or spicy curry chicken and recommends that it be sipped cool and not ice cold from a snifter or red wine glass which is a departure from most beers which are served in pilsners.

The Bishpenol A (BPA) free movement continues to spring forward with companies and consumers tackling the balance between offering affordable, durable, reusable products while keeping an eye on the safety of consumers.

BPA which is frequently used in the production of polycarbonate plastics is typically used to harden plastics and is used with epoxy resin to line the inside of most food and beverage containers. Many producers of plastic products use the chemical because the containers do not typically absorb flavors nor do they change the flavor of the items stored within those containers. They are also able to produce lightweight and nearly indestructible pieces that have the look and feel of glass.

BPA has recently come under fire because the chemical can contaminate the very products that the plastic houses including water, baby formula or food when the chemical leaches out of the plastic often due to consumer misuse such as microwaving or cleaning the item in a dishwasher. BPA has been linked to a host of maladies including cancer, abnormal behavior, diabetes, heart disease, infertility, developmental and reproductive harm and obesity. Concerns over possible harmful side effects of the chemical are becoming more widespread.

In May, Senator Diane Feinstein (D-CA) along with environmental health experts presented the results of a new report demonstrating alarming levels of the chemical was present in canned foods. She introduced legislation to ban BPA in cans and other food and beverage containers as part of the Food Safety Act. The American Chemistry Council which represents a variety of sectors within the plastics industry has also presented a number of studies that refute many of the claims about BPA's harmfulness through a comprehensive website.

Glass which is durable yet more likely to break has faced its own set of challenges as McDonald's Corporation recently issued a massive recall of its 'Shrek Forever After' promotional glasses due to cadmium concerns. Coffee giant Starbucks also issued a recall of glass water bottles it sold in stores in late January due to concerns over shattering.

Initiatives to reduce plastic consumption while also protecting consumers from the dangers of glassware are developing in many surprising places. The City of Chicago passed the first municipal ban in May 2009 when it ordered that no empty food or beverage containers intended for use by children under the age of 3 containing BPA be sold in the city beginning in January of this year. The Maryland Senate approved a measure to ban bottles and cups (but not toys or teething rings) containing BPA for children under 4 in March of this year and the measure will take effect in 2012. Connecticut and Minnesota have also passed similar bans.

MOM's Organic Market, a Rockville, Maryland-based homegrown organic grocery chain launched a Battle the Bottle initiative this month which is designed to substantially reduce plastic use including the elimination of bottled water. Insprired by the movie "Addicted to Plastic", the goal of the program is to address the alarming rate at which oceans are being contaminated by plastic. The program links plastic use to oil dependence and was launched amid attention to U.S. Gulf Coast which is experiencing an unprecendented oil spill which is gusing upwards of 25,000 barrels of oil daily from a well owned by oil company BP.

MOM's will remove all bottled water from its shelves and install water filtration machines in each store allowing customers to use resuable containers for water with the first gallon free on every visit. In addition, each MOM's employee will receive a free counter-top home water filters and reusable water containers. The store will only stock potatoes, onions, oranges and salad mixes in biodegradable clamshells and will eliminate bagged versions of the produce. The chain eliminated the use of plastic grocery bags in 2005 and has an aggresive recycling program.

Golf Legend Jack Nicklaus partners with Terlato Vineyards for Limited Prodution Wines

Golf Legend Jack Nicklaus of Jack Nicklaus Wines has partnered with Terlato Wines of Napa Valley to produce a new line of handcrafted, limited production wines including a 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon and a 2007 Private Reserve. Terlato owns both the Chimney Rock and Rutherford Hill wineries. The winery partnered with Nicklaus due to his background as a wine collector and his desire to create a signature wine that he and his family could produce under the Nicklaus brand. The Cabernet Sauvignon has hints of blackberry, red plum and cedar notes in addition to layered mocha and red current which blend together to add a sweet spice flavor to the wine. The Private Reserve combines Bordeaux grapes and Syrah. The wine has a deep black cherry fruit with vanilla and smoky paprika accents. McDonald's Issues Recall of "Shrek Forever After" Glassware

McDonald's Corporation in conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a voluntary recall of its limited edition set of "Shrek Forever Ever" glassware due to a concern over cadmium levels present in the glassware. The glasses were a recent promotion of the Dreamworks film which has grossed over $133 million in theatres. The glasses have been available at McDonald's restaurants since May 21st. The four designs include popular Shrek characters including Puss 'n Boots, Shrek, Princess Fiona and Donkey. Wine appreciation can often seem like a daunting and intimidating realm for many of us who appreciate good food and good drink. With so many varieties, attactive packaging and labeling along with the uncertainty of knowing whether a bottle beholds something you would want to indulge in for days on end or whether it is something you would rather recork and forget you ever let touch your palette, it is difficult to know where to begin. Fortunately, most vineyards offer tastings, local wine shops do the same, and you can even contact a sommelier to come to your home or private event to give you a tutorial. You need not have much knowledge ahead of time when it comes to wine because there are many books and resources available to help you increase your wine education which can quickly become a great avocation. The wonderful part about drinking wine is that you can trust your senses to lead you down the right path. The key is to know what you like and to give yourself time to explore other offerings with the understanding that with so much product on the market you can go from wine to infinity in a lifetime and never drink the same wine twice. There are a number of accessories on the market that go beyond corkscrews, wine totes and wine racks to help you to maximize your wine experience. I recently tested the Vinturi line of aerators for both red and white wines. Most of us know that decanting is a critical step in aerating red wines. For the true wine geeks, Vinturi has taken scientific principles including Bernoulli's principle which states that as the speed of a moving liquid increases, the pressure within that liquid decreases, a concept dictated by the law of conservation of energy. With the Vinturi red wine aerator, one can increase the velocity of the wine while decreasing the pressure allowing the air to effectively mix with the wine to provide perfect aeration with each pour. The device is simple to use, simply by holding it over the glass and pouring the wine through the top of the unit (those who are especially clumsy may need assistance) the wine will travel through the aerator into your glass. Do not be alarmed when you hear the gurgle of the air mixing with the wine as you pour. We tested the aerator on a merlot and a cabernet sauvignon and the difference in flavor is quite noticable between the original wine and the wine used with the aerator resulting in a much improved upon flavor that brightens the tannens and produces a better mouth feel which in both cases was much smoother. The aerator can make a $10 bottle of wine taste like a $25 bottle of wine easily which is great for those of us with champagne tastes on beer budgets. The red wine unit also includes a filter screen which captures cork and sediment, while preventing clogging and overflow. In addition, Vinturi has also developed an aerator specifically for use with white wines. This model looks similar at first glance, however, the units are not interchangable. The white wine unit does not include the filtration screen, and the unit has been adjusted to produce different flow rates for the white wines to enhance their flavors. Upon testing on a chardonnay and a sauvignon blanc, the difference is flavor is less marked than that for the red wine, but improved nonetheless. Both aerators nest in their own cradle and come with a convenient carrying case. The units are dishwasher safe as well. Cook Like Jackie readers may have been feeling that I have been a little heavy on the tea items, but that is only because this area is exploding. Not only are there great loose tea varieties available and wonderful tea shops to explore, but there are a host of new products on the market that will provide you with maximum tea enjoyment. New and notable is the Takeya Flash Chill Iced Tea Maker, a two-part brewing system that allows you to make up to 66 ounces of your favorite loose or bagged tea at one time. The system comes with two cylindrical AcraGlass food safe and BPA-free pitchers that can be easily integrated into any casual dining environment. When I initially looked at the product, I thought that using two pieces would perhaps be too cumbersome especially for someone like me who is already heavy on the kitchen gear. However after using the system for several days, I came to appreciate the design and the usefulness that the two pitchers provide. The smaller pitcher houses a removable rotating infuser which can steep up to 8 teaspoons of your favorite tea. While you are brewing your tea in the smaller pitcher, ice can be added to the larger pitcher. After steeping, you can simply pour your brewed tea over the ice and turn the lid to seal it in place. If you choose to do so, the smaller pitcher can now be used to brew a backup batch that can replenish your tea when needed. The lids are one of the most remarkable aspects of the tea system because they are designed to be airtight. Each lid has direction labels on the top to help you to lock them in place, and thin slits on each side which when the placed in the proper position, allow for easy pouring. The handle is easy to grip and my was in the avocado/olive color scheme. Other lid color options include orange, blue, white and black. The parts are lightweight yet sturdy, dishwasher safe and the aggravation of having two pieces is easily overlooked when you realize that you can create a backup container which makes refreshing your larger jug a breeze. I would have liked to see a more substantial infuser that contained a heavier plastic or even stainless steel on the basket. I also felt that the mesh part of the infuser is soft and fine, which will keep tea leaves out of the water, but the mesh is a bit flimsy. Fragrant or colored teas may stain the infuser with repeated use, so be sure to clean that part frequently and allow it to dry properly. Cook Like Jackie loves to receive reader questions! Thanks to Shayna from Atlanta for the following question:

Q: I read your articles about kitchen gadgets and things and was wondering what you thought about the Vitamix? Your post about Costco led me to ask you as it is one of the few places here where it can be purchased. Ever heard of it? If so, thoughts?

A: I too have seen the the Vitamix demonstrated at Costco and its claims that it can do so many things in one machine are impressive. The company has a long, storied history of innovation and for the right person it is a great product. However, after looking at the price tag and my lifestyle, I have passed on it for a couple of reasons. The first reason is that after so many years of demonstrating products I realize that most small electrics usually do one or two things well, so general skepticism creeps in because I do not believe that there are truly one size fits all machines. Secondly, knowing that I am a person who loves the next best thing, being wedded to a $650 machine like this is not something I am inclined to do. Third, style is important to me, I want all of the gadgets that I buy to have a common theme or thread, to look contemporary and to essentially bring artwork into my kitchen. Finally, I am very stringent about not doing too many things with the same machine. I don't want to mix ice cream in the same machine I use to make salsa for example. Your question led me to share with you and other readers some of the rules of thumb that I use as a guide for selecting products that suit me:

Determine what you like to eat versus what you like to cook. Most people know what foods and dishes they like to eat, but asking them to prepare something is totally different. Try to find products that will enhance what you are already inclined to do, but would like to do in a more efficient way. For example, I love fresh squeezed juice, but I usually find it easier to buy a concentrate and just add water. However, when I started to use a citrus press, it made the job of squeezing fruits easier and led me back to a more authentic taste with less sugar because it is easy to use and easy to clean.

Do not overlook the social aspects of food. As a seasoned demonstrator who has worked on a variety of machines, I have a kinship with the people who demonstrate the Vitamix and other gadgets. For example, many of the customers I have demonstrated espresso machines to go to coffeeshops almost daily. They are likely spending thousands of dollars a year on lattes, espressos and cappucinos and could practically buy more than one of my machines if they really took a hard look at their finances. However, what I have to remind myself is that for some people, buying that cup of coffee is about more than just ingesting it, some people like to go to the coffee shop and have someone take their order, others go to socialize and network or to take a break from a stressful day. Personally, I want to be able to replicate what I can get at a shop or restaurant at home because I like for things to taste a certain way and I am concerned about quality. So if you find yourself in the same boat as me, save up a few dollars a week and treat yourself with a premium machine so that your culinary experiences will be seamless.

Make a budget and stick to it. Over the past few years I have dedicated a good amount of my disposible income to buying things for my kitchen, but I view it as part vocation and part avocation and an investment in my personal happiness. Each year I make a list of things I would like to purchase by category and get what makes the most sense while being on the lookout for sales and coupons especially for high priced items. I also try to give things away or sell used items that I no longer use. I also start small knowing that I can always upgrade later a great example being the knife set I featured in my previous Q&A.

Seek out demonstrations where you can view the products live. Years ago I used to pass up demonstrations while in stores, but when I started to do the work myself I realized just how beneficial they are in helping me to make wise decisions. By simply visiting most product websites, you can find information on locations, dates and times of live demonstrations. You should never be afraid to ask the demonstrator questions, if they are knowledgeable about their products they should be able to answer intelligently. Ask if you can try to the use the machine yourself on the spot, if you find that it is difficult to use, or that it requires too many steps, or better yet if the demonstrator is reluctant to let you do so, that may be a sign that it is not the right product for you. Downloading instruction manuals is also a great way to get a feel for a product before you buy it as well.

Pay attention to the warranty and shelf life. Most machines are vigorously tested to determine how often consumers will use them and to account for wear and tear. You should look into at least two things when investing in housewares, the first is the warranty. How long do you have protection should the machine break on you? Are you willing to take the time to learn how to use it properly? How about storage? The second issue is the shelf life. Durable goods no longer mean that something is going to last you for 30 years or more, instead most small electrics will probably give you a good 5-10 years before something conks out whether it be a finish, a part, or a motor for example. Most reputable companies provide at least a one year warranty on their products and some even extend them to two years or more. Seek out companies that do not give you hassle if you try to return something under warranty because it signals that they stand behind their products and they want you to be a loyal customer.

The stand mixer sends a serious statement to anyone entering your domain that you are serious about your cooking and serious about the equipment you use. Le Creuset Stoneware Line Expanded

Last September, I ran a story which highlighted the Le Creuset Honeypot with dipper. I have long been a fan of the Le Creuset line of stoneware pieces which now include a full line of fruits and vegetables like the garlic-shaped stoneware piece, which I use as a storage vessel for one of my most frequently used items. I found the honeypot to be quite remarkable with its beautiful honeybee impression and the dipper which could conveniently be stored in the pot and would be a great gift for a person who enjoys adding honey to teas or recipes. Le Creuset has expanded its collection of stoneware accesories this year to include a more complete line of pieces that are both practical and reasonably priced. What is most impressive about this line is the fact that many of the new pieces also include a coordinating utensil whether it be the small spatula spoon for the mustard jar, a silicone brush for the barbecue sauce jar or a small fork for the olive jar. While these vessels are a perfect compliment to owners of Le Creuset lines in their signature vibrant colors, the pieces can fit quite nicely into most dining and entertainment setting providing wonderful pops of color and giving the host or hostess pieces which make it easy for guests to identify their contents. The barbecue sauce jar which hit stores this month just in time for grilling season in a rich cherry color, includes an impression of a pig and holds 16 ounces of sauce and the silicone basting brush. The Quest for Perfect Tea Begins with PerfecTea

As the tea industry positions itself for substantial growth, tea aficionados are fortunate to have a wonderful assortment of implements on the market that enhance the tea drinking experience. For those of us who have expanded our tea knowledge and enjoy the benefits of many different types of teas whether they be black, green, red, white or herbal--maximizing tea flavors through optimum brewing temperatures is a goal not often attainable through the use of traditional stovetop kettles. Those kettles heat water just fine, but they very rarely provide temperature information beyond the boiling post which is perfectly suitable for black teas, but less so for other types of tea. The science of brewing tea through the pairing of tea type with a compatible water temperature is behind the Capresso PerfecTea, a beautiful addition to the growing line of variable temperature kettles on the market. While other models have simply served to create a functional apparatus, Capresso has infused thoughtful artistic touches and fine tuning that result in a distinctive kettle that stands above the competition. The base not only serves to heat the kettle with a knob that is easy to turn and control, and a touch button feature that provide a beautiful light blue LCD backlit illumination when pressed, it also houses a slide out guide which provides an easy reference for optimum temperatures which are found in Fahrenheit intervals of 100, 160, 175 and 195 degrees and Boil. After the desired temperature is reached, the unit automatically shuts off. In addition, dry boil protection serves as an added safety feature which prevents the kettle from being used when there is no water inside of it. Capresso has done a fine job of incorporating beautiful design with modern safety features, and created a practical, versatile and affordable variable temperature kettle in the PerfecTea. Storage Solutions - CoverMates

It is a truly rare find to visit a household that does not have a dedicated drawer for food storage products like wraps, bags and coverings. I have always found humor in the overdramatic scenes frequently portrayed in television commercials, but I have to admit that leaks, spoilage and decimation of my food has led to great moments of disappointment, anger and frustration. I am always on the lookout for great products that will help me to optimize my storage options, but old habits die hard. The first step for me was to break away from what I had been accustomed to using. I eventually had to admit that I have little dexterity with plastic wraps or foils. I finally realized that some people are especially gifted at wrapping food like others are at wrapping gifts. My trials led me to wonder if there was a class somewhere I should take on food wrapping techniques? I needed capsules on how to avoid pitfalls like seeing your plastic bunching up before you can tear it off, the asymetrical tear, or the punched look when the serrated blade penetrates but does not quite tear off the roll, or the worst mishap of all, dropping the entire roll from the box and then trying to straighten the plastic wrap for the next use. I eventually abandoned plastic for foil, but found little success there either. Foil appears so pretty and shiny on the first go round, but can often be diffcult to seal tightly. After one use it reveals its limited use--let's face it--no one really wants to use recycled foil. I eventually moved on and invested quite a few dollars into plastic storage container sets only to eventually lose lids because I could not quite figure out the best place to store them. I also found it difficult and sometimes impossible to get the lids to stay in place, and generally I found that many of the containers were too bulky for my needs. The makers of CoverMates apparently had me in mind when they developed their system. I never knew that what I was really in need of were stretch-to-fit covers that I could use on all of my lidless plastic storage containers just as easily as I would my dinnerware. The first thing CoverMates did right was to create a size system of small, medium, large and extra large--a perfect compliment to the way that many of us shop for clothing. We don't expect perfection when we buy these sizes, but we know the range of things they will fit. The food covers work in the freezer and the refrigerator, and are designed for both cooling and freezing. CoverMates are also compatible with microwaves and great for reheating, defrosting and steaming foods. The designers were very thoughtful and integrated corner vents to allow steam to escape during the microwaving process, built-in the flexbands which stretch to fit round and square containers because the covers accomodate corners. The heat-sealed edge allows the covers to be reusable because water cannot penetrate the seal. One will also find the heft of the covers to be a wonderful weight, not too heavy and not too light. Notably, they are clear covers which allow you to see your foods and to take the mystery out of guessing through cloudy lids or distorted covers. Finally, CoverMates are in line with many green aspects consumers like me are looking for, they are reusable and easy to clean (you can actually place them in the dishwasher). As an added plus, the covers are made with FDA-compliant food-grade polyethylene film and a biodegradable latex-free rubber band, and they are free of both BPA and PVC. 2010 International Home + Housewares Show Highlights

The 2010 International Home + Housewares Show was held on March 14-March 16 at McCormick Place in Chicago. Vendors from around the world converged to showcase a variety of items for the home. Several themes emerged from the show including a renewed focused on BPA-free plastics that can accomodate hot and cold beverages, and the use of renewable and recyclable materials such as bamboo. The use of color particularly in bakeware and small electrics provide unique opportunities for accents of color in a kitchen or dining area. Pantone highlighted the 2010 color of the year Turqouise and featured a color display that reinforced that retailers who choose pops of bold colors along with strong neutrals like gray, brown, white and black will catch the eye of the consumer this year. The predominant small electrics were electric and variable tempertature kettles which appeal to consumers interested in lowering energy costs and adjusting between coffees and the exploding tea market. Coffee remains king however as several companies presented single-serve models ideal for a coffee drinker on the go or one who wishes to provide easy coffee entertaining in the home. Many models were displayed including a handheld espresso maker to a luxurious fully automatic machine by one of Italy's venerated manufacturers along with updated lines from existing brands. Popular beverage options clearly focused on juicers including one incorporating the use of different technologies including low-speed extraction. For the tabletop, many ceramics are going lightweight and are more colorful and customized with colors such as red and purple dominating the landscape. Frypans have also become new canvases for color and design alternatives in the kitchen. New covers and a line of cold forged aluminum cookware provides an alternative to traditional cast iron. Reusable totes, carriers, bags and shoppers continue to remain popular with grocery consumers. Manufacturers are using neoprene and other lightweight materials such as nylon are providing attractive alternatives to canvas and cotton bags. Storage solutions including multi-function collapsable containers, modular systems, flexible lids and interchangable tops address the variety of needs for today's consumer. Accessories will include more safety features, collapsable components for easier storage and pops of color. Indoor and outdoor grilling continues to sizzle and many new options including grills, accessories, marinades, rubs and sauces are poised for significant growth. FDA to seek improved spice safeguards

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is seeking to take a closer look at spices in light of a nationwide outbreak of salmonella illness which has been recently linked to black and red pepper. To date, the FDA has identified 16 U.S. recalls since 2001 of tainted spices including basil, sage and peppers.

In an effort to improve the safety of these staples of cooking, the FDA is seeking to have the spice industry implement three methods to rid spices of bacteria including irradiation, steam heating or fumigation with ethlylene oxide which is a pesticide. Congress has also sought to mandate that spice importers verify the safety of foreign suppliers and food imports under the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009 introduced by Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT).

Statistics produced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirm that the average American diet now includes the subtantial use of spices. The USDA reports that the average American now consumes roughly 3.5 pounds of spices, up significantly from the late 1960s when that figure was closer to 1.2 pounds. This could reflect exposure to a wider variety of food-focused television shows, the growth of various ethnic and fusion cuisines, increased travel abroad and the wider availability of spices in general. A detailed list of spices is maintained by the American Spice Trade Association for reference.

New Sites - Argo Tea Cafe NYC

While out and about in New York on yesterday I stopped by the Argo Tea Cafe. The company which boasts several locations in Chicago and a newly opened location in the Flatiron Building offered samplings of a wonderful hibiscus tea.

I loved the interior with luscious earth tones including greens, browns and creams and the selection of loose teas available for purchase including a surprisingly wide selection including South American Mate and South African Red Teas. One can purchase a prepackaged tea or bag their own by using canisters similar to those in the coffee aisles.

Ciao Bella Gelato New Flavors

I first fell in love with Ciao Bella Gelato when my friend purchased a pint of the Blood Orange flavor for me while I was visiting with her in New York City. I went so crazy over it that it has become a staple on my future trips to the city.

Ciao Bella recently added six new flavors to its already extensive lineup of flavors along with new packaging. The new flavors include peach ginger, prickly pear, wild blueberry, strawberry, matcha green tea and honey toasted pecan.
